Neurosurgery (or neurological surgery) is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system.

Specialized branches have developed to cater to special and difficult conditions. These specialized branches co-exist with general neurosurgery in more sophisticated hospitals. To practice advanced specialization within neurosurgery, additional higher fellowship training of one to two years is expected from the neurosurgeon. Some of these divisions of neurosurgery are:

  1. vascular neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery
  2. oncological neurosurgery
  3. spinal neurosurgery
  4. peripheral nerve surgery
  5. pediatric neurosurgery

Oral & Maxillofacial surgery (OMS) specializes in treating many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the Oral (mouth) and Maxillofacial (jaws and face) region. It is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. In some countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and Israel, it is a recognized specialty of dentistry; in others, such as the UK and most of Europe, it is recognized as both a specialty of medicine and dentistry and a dual degree in medicine anddentistry is compulsory.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax (the chest)—generally treatment of conditions of the heart (heart disease) and lungs (lung disease). Cardiac surgery (involving theheart and great vessels) and thoracic surgery (involving the lungs) are separate surgical specialties, except in the USA,Australia, New Zealand, and in some EU countries, such as the UK and Portugal

Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics (alternatively spelled orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedics) is the branch ofsurgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Gynecological surgery refers to surgery on the female reproductive system. Gynecological surgery is usually performed by gynecologists. It includes procedures for benign conditions, cancer, infertility, and incontinence.[1]Gynecological surgery may occasionally be performed for elective or cosmetic purposes.

Organ transplantation is the moving of an organ from one body to another or from a donor site to another location on the person's own body, to replace the recipient's damaged or absent organ. Organs and/or tissues that are transplanted within the same person's body are called autografts. Transplants that are recently performed between two subjects of the same species are called allografts. Allografts can either be from a living or cadaveric source.

Organs that can be transplanted are the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine, and thymus. Tissues includebones, tendons (both referred to as musculoskeletal grafts), cornea, skin, heart valves, nerves and veins. Worldwide, the kidneys are the most commonly transplanted organs, followed by the liver and then the heart. Cornea and musculoskeletal grafts are the most commonly transplanted tissues; these outnumber organ transplants by more than tenfold

Acute Care Surgery (ACS) is an evolving specialty with three essential components- trauma, critical care and emergency surgery. Following a survey of the surgical critical care program directors and of the major trauma organizations it was clear that trauma and critical care surgeons were increasingly responsible for emergency surgical care. This increasing responsibility was a result of increasing need for trauma and emergency surgical coverage in both academic and community hospitals. There was an educational gap identified as Trauma and Acute Care Surgical specialty emerged. Leaders in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery have developed educational goals and encouraged a more formalized curriculum for training programs to meet this educational gap. The AAST has taken the lead in reviewing programs who have decided to pursue this more formalized curriculum. These approved programs undergo a rigorous review to ensure that each trainee meets the goals of the Acute Care Surgery program.

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It includes cosmetic or aesthetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns.

Eye surgery, also known as ocular surgery, is surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa, typically by anophthalmologist.[1] The eye is a fragile organ, and requires extreme care before, during, and after a surgical procedure. An expert eye surgeon is responsible for selecting the appropriate surgical procedure for the patient, and for taking the necessary safety precautions. Surgery on the eye is routinely performed to repair retinal defects, remove cataracts or cancer, or to repair eye muscles. The most common purpose of ophthalmologic surgery is to restore or improve vision. Many ophthalmologic surgeries now use lasers, which decrease the operating time as well as recovery time.

acute pain is defined as pain that is present in a surgical patient after a procedure. Such pain may be the result of trauma from the procedure or procedure-related complications. Pain management in the perioperative setting refers to actions before, during, and after a procedure that are intended to reduceInstitutional policies and procedures include

  1. education and training for healthcare providers,
  2. monitoring of patient outcomes,
  3. documentation of monitoring activities,
  4. monitoring of outcomes at an institutional level,
  5. 24-h availability of anesthesiologists providing perioperative pain management, and
  6. use of a dedicated acute pain service. or eliminate postoperative pain before discharge.

Anesthesia awareness, also referred to as accidental awareness during general anaesthesia (AAGA) or unintended intra-operative awareness, is a potential complication occurring during general anesthesia where the intended state of complete unconsciousness is not maintained throughout the whole procedure. It can occur either because of failure to deliver sufficient anesthetic medication to the patient's body, or because of individual patient factors that mean the patient is resistant to what would normally be an adequate dose of anesthetic medication.
