An oncology nurse cares for cancer patients and requires advanced certifications and clinical experiences in oncology further than the typical baccalaureate nursing program provides. Oncology nursing meets the various needs of cancer patients during the time of their disease including suitable screenings and other preventive practices, symptom management, care to retain as much regular functioning as possible, and supportive measures upon end of life. Oncology nurses have appropriate training in the administration, handling, side effects, and dosing of chemotherapy. One of the chief roles of the oncology nurse is patient assessment who have presented due to treatment side effects, as well as assessing patients pre-, during and post-chemotherapy.
